I just checked the log for
this page, The Smoke-Free Entertainment Guide is read in over
forty-one countries!
(Now, I really doubt
most of them are repeat visitors since for the most part the guide is

Puget Sound, but hey,
it sounds pretty cool).
On the other hand,
I have had requests to expand The Smoke-Free Entertainment Guide
beyond the Puget Sound.
Okey Dokee, here's
what I'll do. If you send me in a review for any place in the world,
I will make a place for it and post it. Pretty simple,

I try to hyperlink my reviews to locations on the net belonging or relating to the establishment that I have reviewed and more often than not I also link to Don Scheidt's excellent Northwest Brewpage. He has put an incredible amount of effort into the excellent, detailed reviews of Northwest breweries, brewpubs, and pubs. He has included the establishments smoking policy in his descriptions. I am deeply grateful to him for all of the leads I have gleaned from his pages.
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO SEND IN SUCH NICE E-MAIL THANKING ME FOR THESE PAGES!

Hello - Just wanted to say thanks for your website! I was relieved to
find it when a few new friends suggested coordinating a monthly beer
night. The first bar suggested was one of the smokiest in town,
although none of us smoke. With the help of your website, I was able
to suggest seven smoke-free bars around my neighborhood. It helped me
to expand beyond the three that came to mind.
I was also relieved to see there are efforts to promote smoke-free music venues. I love live music, but have gone to fewer and fewer shows over the years because most venues are so smoke-filled.
Keep up the good smoke-free work.
Thanks, Melissa

Hello, love your site. :o) I'm coming down to Seattle in July 2001
and am very interested in going somewhere that doesn't have a bunch
of Dragon Breaths standing around polluting my air!! hehe Thanks for
the list! I am originally from Vancouver, BC, Canada, and have been
to Seattle many times on both business and pleasure. I am anxiously
awaiting my excursion to your fair 'Emerald City'.

Doug, I just wanted to let you know how happy I am to have come upon
your site. I am highly allergic to smoke and going out (which often
times being social necessitates) is sometimes a miserable venture.
I'll be sure to check out some of these places. Jacque

Hey Doug! Love your smoke-free page. I just moved here from North
Carolina, and have actually had my only fight there with a smoker
(previously warned) who blew smoke in my face.

Congratulations on your smoke free guide. I am the person behind King
County's smoke free dining guide (that you link to at
http://www.metrokc.gov/health/tobacco/smkfree.htm)...
My staff and myself are working on calling all the King County
restaurants again this year for the next update of the smoke free
dining guide. I'm sure you know the amount of effort it takes to keep
up a good smoke free dining (or entertainment) guide... I'm thankful
that there is smoke free entertainment in the seattle region, as I
myself find that I end up smoking other people's secondhand smoke
when I go out. Thank you for providing this resource. Colin Jones of
Metro & King County Public Health [And thank you Colin for
providing more info and great reviews for the Smoke-free Entainment

Hi again! I just
checked out your site -- it's awesome! You must go out to eat a lot!
You may already know this, but the Cedar River closed last weekend --
much to all our dismay! But Renton city officials expect (hope)
another restaurant will open in the same building. Sue Kidd - South

for moving back to this gorgeous state i grew up in has been it's
smoke permitting restaurants and bars/pubs :-( i have made it my goal
to frequent only smoke-free establishments and plan to start visiting
and checking your pics off the list!! keep up the vigil!!!

Okay, it really isn't
my style to gush over anything. However, I feel inclined to give you
props over your wonderful website! What a breath of fresh air!
(Pardon the pun. :) ) I LOVE to dance (techno, et cetera) but HATE
the smoke in the dance clubs. Such a love/hate relationship isn't
healthy. Do you perchance have a listing of SMOKE FREE DANCE CLUBS???
I know some do exist...somewhere. I love to dance in Seattle and in
Vancouver. My body is my temple, and the temple is smoke free. So, do
you have any advice for this dancing diva? Thanks a bunch and keep up
the great service. [Thanks Theresa (High Priestess of the
young and the smokeless, and on an ordained quest for smoke free

Dear Doug, I was
delighted to come across your site. I will definitely use it in the
future to find restaurants to try out. But I came across your site
while trying to find smoke-free places to dance. I saw the Century
Ballroom, and from there the Russian Club, and I found Madison's cafe
and Old Town Ale House as places that have music. But without having
to go to each place's individual web sites (for those that have
them), is there an easy way to find the places that offer music
and/or dancing? [Thank you Linda]

Wow, absolutely love
the web page, very informative since I'll be visiting Seattle in
July! Government is trying to pass a non-smoking indoors bylaw here
in Victoria, but it's getting a lot of criticism, its scheduled to
start January 1, 1999, but already many places are saying they will
disobey the law. It turns me off a lot of places here, but I can see
I'll have my schedule packed full in Seattle! Thanks,
Jon.

Subject: eastside
smoke-free bars
I think you're doing a great service posting this list. I am so sick of spending yet another $20 on dry-cleaning just because someone lights up. Smokers might as well splash mud on other people's clothes, financially it has the same effect. -- Ken in Bellevue

Subject: nonsmoking
bars
Saw your site on a
search I did today and was shocked to see how little there is on the
net about non-smoking bars. I live in Durham, NC (home of tobacco
companies) and am contemplating opening a smoke-free bar. Do you know
of other links in other parts of the US? As cigar bars rise in
popularity, I would like to see an alternative. Blaise

Thanks a lot. As a
musician, I wish there were more smoke-free venues for local music.
You should add the Old Town Alehouse on Ballard Ave.

list is greatly appreciated. Thanks again!!! Have a great day!

Hey Doug, as somebody
who doesn't usually go out because of the effects of smoke on my
throat and overall sense of well being.... I have to give you a
hearty THANKS for your efforts to make people aware of the
non-smoking places in Seattle. I hope the list continues to grow! It
really perplexes me how Seattle can be such a hotbed for smokaholics.
What ever happened to the 80's when smoking was
"uncool?"
Your efforts are
SUPER commendable, and I will recommend your page to others and check
back frequently for new places where I can actually go. Any
additional places that have live music would be a nice
surprise! Thanks and best of luck. [Thanks

Subject: Non-Smokers
in Seattle? Can it be??
Doug, Hi, my name is
Alex, (short for Alexandria) and I just wanted to say that I think
your web pages are great! I got to your non-smoking page through the
Yahoo Seattle site and I'm thrilled to know these places exist. My
roommate and I just moved here from Boulder, CO which is basically a
non-smoking town. We have been out in Seattle a couple of times but,
have been turned off by the amount of smokers there are in this town.
I guess Boulder is an exception but, I thought that Seattle might be
a little more environmentally aware then it is. Anyway, I will
definitely try some or all of the establishments that you recommend.
Especially the ones that offer Guinness! Too, bad that Kells, and The
Owl and The Thistle allow smokers! Can you recommend any non-smoking
bars that can pour a Guinness correctly? (I want a clover in my
foam!) Keep up the good work! I have book marked you page and will
visit again! [Thanks, Alex].

Dear Doug, I really
enjoyed reading the reviews of smoke-free places in the Seattle area.
I've been living overseas for about four years and I'm moving back to
Seattle next week. Now I remember why I'm coming back! It's hard to
believe that places like Puyallup and Kent actually have smoke free
pubs! Wow. I'll check in again when I get into town.

King James on smoking
(c. 1604)
Call 'em micros, craft brews, or motor oil, I believe it's better
to have one pint of a brew with some character than to down a
six-pack of watery, carbonated barley pop. If you like microbrews
now, you know what I'm talking about. If you are still ordering Bud
because you tried a soapy, bitter micro once and didn't like it, try
again. There is an amazing diversity of tastes out there. Find a
place that will let you sample different beers and go
nuts.
A skillfully fabricated cocktail is a work of art. Like craft beers, my goal with cocktails is quality not quantity. The sheer number of ingredients and mixology magic associated with the creation of a drink assures that one can never cease to find new combinations to surprise and delight the taste buds.
