The Pacific Crest Brewing Company - Located in a huge steel building south of Boeing Field, this is a real brewery taproom. No wussy polished brass boilers and such safely behind plate glass. Here you sit right in the brewery and drink finely crafted beverages with the hard working folks that make it. The second that you walk in the door and the heady smell of fermentation hits, you know this is going to be good. Tasty, lively brews. Try the Old Man Winter.

Parkway Tavern - ...kicks ass and is SmokeFree to boot! With only about 13 taps, this neighborhood pub usually has about 5 of my favorite brews flowing. And they'll sell you any pint glass they have for $1.50, even though the brewers themselves would likely charge you $4 for the same glass. Their pub food ain't too shabby either. [Thanks Bernard]

Call the Parkway for more info: Tacoma, 253-383-8748.

The Powerhouse Restaurant and Brewery - A fairly new pub and grill that's a breath of fresh air in Puyallup. Serving northwest micros and great food, The Powerhouse resides in an old building that used to supply electricity to a trolly line (can you say deja-Trollyman?).

The place is great, but I can't seem to warm up to the upscale patrons. Upscale is not what I would expect in Puyallup, but it doesn't seem to be hurting business any, the place is usually packed. This brings up the subject of parking. They have jammed the seating in the place claustophobically close, yet there are about a dozen parking places. The "no parking or you die" signs at neighboring sites attest to the creativity needed to find a place to moor your Lexus (or 20 year old Toyota PU).

You might gather from the above that I didn't like The Powerhouse. On the contrary. The high voltage power station theme is pretty cool and is very well done. The food and drink are first rate and creative. I enjoyed the place thoroughly when I went on a weekday afternoon and was able to drive up, park, sit down, read the paper, enjoy a pint of porter and lineman's platter (cheese, crackers, fruit), and watch the two women at the bar get giggley.

Red Dawg Brew Pub - Hi, we are a band and probably not who you want reviewing the Red Dawg BUT they have been really nice to us and have great live Blues entertainment once a month there as well. Dave and Sue do a great job cooking for us when ever we go there and they brew up their own beer and soda also. You should go check them out on your way to Portland or as a destination. [Thanks for the words Andy, I'll even post your band's info]

Rock Pasta Brick Oven Pizza and Brewery - Tacoma - Rock Pasta kicks butt! The theme is rock & roll (the good stuff from the 70s and  80s...I wish I could remember some of the names of their dishes...ah, well...you'll just have to go see for yourself). They have a brick oven and their pizza is to die for! They have really unusual combinations, like feta cheese and carmelized onions. Their all-you-can-eat buffet ROCKS, including their delectable assortment of pizzas, really good salad, fabulous cheesy bread and some sort of pasta. Man, my mouth is watering thinking about it. The best part? They're opening a sister store this fall in Auburn called The Rock! Yahoo! [Thanks LJ]

Rose Hill Ale House and Cafe - You might want to call before making a trip here. I just got email from a friend saying that our planned get together at the Rosehill this evening will have to be moved. He'd stopped by yesterday after noticing that the place was dark. He said the phone was not answered and there is a sign in the window that they are waiting for their license to be renewed (or something like that). [Thanks for the tip Brian]

It's very clean, well lit, great food including a "Walking Taco", has pool, darts, shuffleboard, run by 3 guys, 2 of which are keeping their day jobs at Boeing. Very popular on the East Side...handicapped accessible too. Judy G. [Thanks Judy]

Date: Sun, 5 Apr 1998 00:04:35 EST, Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that there is a great little place in the Rose Hill/Kirkland area, the Rose Hill Ale House. They offer over 20 different brews on tap (local through international) which change quite often. It's a great place to watch a game on the big screen and grab some good grub (without coming out smelling like a Marlboro Man!!). Thanks!! Lynly and Kevin.

[10/16/99] I've always loved the Rose Hill Ale House. Though I live way out in Poulsbo I try to make it in a few times each year. The last time I stopped, in early October, they had Liefman's Goudenband on tap. It's Belgian and one of the world's most complex beers. You'll rarely ever find it on tap even in Belgium. This keg blew that evening and the owner said he was next going to have on that tap a keg of N'Ice Chouffe, a Belgian barley wine. Again, you'll never see this on tap anywhere else. This is a serious beer lover's mecca. The fact that they don't allow smoking really allows you to appreciate all the flavor and aroma of such great beers. In addition to his amazing European taps he always has lots of the best brews from the West Coast too. On that last visit he had North Coast's Red Seal Ale, Pike Place's Old Bawdy Barley Wine, and many more tempting draughts. If they could keep all the aroma and flavor and take away all the calories and the alcohol in these great beers, I'd never leave this place. Cheers! 10/16/99 Alan M. [Thanks Alan]

The Russian Center - I know that some of you have been looking for smoke-free ballroom dancing. It sounds like this may be the ticket. If someone checks this out, let me know what you think, and whether it is smoke-free every night. See also The Century Ballroom. And this place is all-ages!

704 19th Ave E (at E Roy), Capitol Hill, Seattle.

Scuttlebutt Brewing Company - Doug, I'm the headbrewer at Scuttlebutt Brewing in Everett. Just wanted to add our name to your list of smokefree restaurants (the brewery is smokefree too). We do allow smoking outside which is covered by an awning. Check out our website www.scuttlebuttbrewing.com. Cheers! Pat Doud. [Thanks, Pat]

[11/7/99] The people at this brewery are so friendly, you'll feel right at home. The taproom is attractive with all sorts of nautical themed art, the brewery is located right on the waterfront and very near the navy base. The beer is great, they have 8-10 different brews on tap, usually including one cask conditioned ale. When we visited in early November they had their vintage barley wine, Old No. 1, in bottles. It's fantastic! We had 30 homebrewers visit as part of a brewery tour of northern Washington. This barley wine seemed to be the consensus favorite for best beer of the day. The food looks great though I still haven't had the time to enjoy it. I can't wait to get back there again. Alan Moum [Thanks for another great review Alan]

1524 West Marine View Drive, Everett, 425-257-9316

Silver City Brewing Company - [10/9/99] What an awesome combination of beer, food, and friendly service. This is the best place to drink and eat in Kitsap County. The brewer, Don Spencer, keeps 6 regular beers and as many as 4-5 seasonals on tap. This is one of those wonderful breweries where the food is as good as the beer, and they're both superb. A perfect spot for family dining, Don also makes his own root beer and ginger ale which are served in "bottomless pints" (free refills). Ask about the happy hour beer and appetizer specials. The Houmes brothers are always around to make sure your visit to their establishment is a memorable one. [Thanks Alan]

Six Degrees - All Six Degrees locations are smoke free (as far as I am aware), including the locations in Kirkland and Redmond that are not mentioned. [Thanks Colin of Metro/KC Public Health]

My friend Tom calls it upscale, I think it's more Green Lake funky. I think because he lives at Green Lake that the area influences get by him. It is definitely very nice -- for instance, all of the tables and chairs match. The layout is cleverly broken into distinct areas and elevations with the high ground being in the rear. The front of the place can be opened onto the street for handy viewing of the always interesting lake walk traffic. The staff was friendly and fast without being suck-ups. I like that. I can't write what Tom said to write about one of the waitresses, It wouldn't be tasteful, and I blush so easily. Good selection of brews. Tom had an African Amber, and I had a Pilsner Urquell (must have been in a rare old-world mood). We visited at about 10:00 pm on a Saturday night and the kitchen was, for the most part, closed. The fries were still available though, covered with seasoning and minced garlic with a tasty dipping sauce. Tom said he wasn't hungry, but he really tore into those fries with gusto. He even got a spoon out and cleaned up the garlic-spices-tater crumbs. [Thanks Tom]

Skagit River Brewing Company - Great Brew Pub in a rustic building. Occasional live music events. Great food at the recently added "Richelles" (sp?) restaurant, focusing on barbecue, but something for almost everyone. Smoking allowed outside on the deck...which has periodically assaulted my nose while enjoying a beer. [Thanks, Tripweaver]

404 South Third Street, Mount Vernon, WA, 360-336-2884

Snipes Mountian Brewpub - In the heat of July in eastern Washington this family style brewpub is botha beer oasis and a smokefree zone! Housed in a brand new building with a log cabin motif this pub produces mostly lower gravity (thus alcohol) beers that matched well with the warm temperature. Not low alcohol compared to Millwiser, but relative to other Northwest craft beers. They also brew a range of beers, 13 styles including lagers according to the website, some with substantial alcohol. Their hop harvest ale, brewed with freshly picked hops, won the consumer's choice award at the 2nd session of the WA Brewer's Guild Cask Ale Fest in October 2002. Thought is was one of the most interesting flavors I had that day, even if I voted for Winter Fish. Fresh hops are used vs. commonly used dried hops, very nice indeed.

Cask: Nada thing

Tap: Seven pouring beers made on site: Blonde ale, Hefeweizen, ESB (1998 Silver at the World Beer Cup), Porter, Barley wine, and Coyote Moon with medium body, amber/orange color and the sweet taste of caramel malt.

10oz Schooner $2.75
16oz Pint 3.25
64oz Pitcher 9.75 << Mathematical bargain but maybe not if your driving.

18 wines on the list, 8 more by the glass, nearly all from eastern Washington grapes makes this a good stop for wine drinkers also.

Full menu with wood fired pizza, steaks, and seafood. $7 burgers, $9 pizza, $12 pasta, $19 steaks.

Spiro's Greek Island - Great traditional homemade greek food. Becoming quite a popular place in Kent. Located on 1st near Bittersweets, this downtown area is getting quite a few nice restaurants and shops.

Still Life in Fremont Coffehouse - OK, I do seem to be hanging out a lot in Fremont lately. I think it's just a phase I'm going through. The Still Life has great, tasty food that ain't burgers. I had the open faced sandwich special. It was some vegetables I couldn't recognize tossed with some sort of marinated white cheese on lettuce and some home made bread. It worked for me. Washed it down with a Kemper's Birch Soda. Yumm! [did I just use the word yumm?).

Now realize this is a coffee house in Fremont, there are going to be some poet and artist types in residence. Don't be alarmed, this is their natural habitat. They feel as secure here as they will anywhere and they will not attack unless provoked.

The Stumbling Monk - 12/29/04 - While I had heard rumors of the great, inexpensive Belgian Ale selection at the Monk, I had avoided the place because I had also heard it was really smokey. Well, as if April 2004 The Stumbling Monk is now smoke-free!

Cask: Tapped each Thursday and lasting through the weekend, 12/30/04 will see Jolly Rodger.

Tap: 9 Belgian styles when I was there.

They serve a great blend of Imported and local Belgian inspired beer such as Monkfish Tripple - too phenolic for me but may age well, Dick's Tripple (9.5%) this hit the spot, Dick's Silk Lady (5%), Maudite (8%), Chimay Tripple (8%), Hoegarden White, Val Die Tripple, Gulden Draak Dark Tripple (10.5%) rich raisin and brown sugar notes, and N'ice Chouffe (10.5%) . . . no wonder I have a headache.

Glass: $3.50 to 4.50
Pitcher: $14 for most
Bottles: Several, including Oud Beersl Guezue, Orval, Westmalle Double & Tripple, and the overly sweet Lindeman's fruit "lambics". From $4 to $15.

Quite an enigmatic place, from the outside The Monk looks as if it has been closed for years with vestiges of the former copy shop still visible. Don't be fooled, just because the place has late hours (6pm - 2am) I passed by it for weeks assuming it had been closed. On the inside it is a small to medium dimly lit place with tables in front, booths down the left hand wall, and the bar in the back right. It is dimly lit, spooky, and a great place for drinking in some Belgian culture.

As for food, they prepare none but do allow you to bring your own. We grabbed some chicken teriyaki from the place next door. The bartender recommended the Goulden Draak Tripple, and it's rich brown sugar and alcohol proved a great match with the sweet brown teriyaki sauce.

Sunbreak Cafe - Homestyle cafe in Auburn. Excellent breakfasts. They open early, even on the weekends, so you can get a good breakfast on your way to play.

The Sunbreak just relocated about two blocks east of where they used to be. Nicer place, still smoke-free.

The Trolleyman at Redhook Brewery - Sadly, The Trollyman is gone.

Gather 'round kids and let me tell you about the good old days when Redhook was just starting out... (hmmm?!?!?).

Go and relax in The Trollyman. It's the brewpub for the brewery (in Fremont) and a very nice place to kick back. Try one of the special brews available here only for limited times while they try new recipes. They also serve food. The menu is limited but changes frequently and everything is very tasty if not a little too pricey.

Well they brew in two locations now and we, the consumer, may have, figuratively speaking, moved a little farther away from the brewers, but it's still extremely nice stuff.

Taco Del Mar-Mission Style Burritos - Big hirkin' handmade burritos. Made with natural, fresh, healthy ingredients. I had a "Jumbo", which is the smallest burrito that they serve. It was about as big as my forearm. I would hate to meet the "Super" size burrito in a dark alley.

Tides Tavern - Hi Doug, I was just checking your site for updates and see that The Tides Tavern in Gig Harbor is not yet listed.  It's a very popular spot, particularly in the summer when the deck is open for dining on the bay.  The Tides has been around a long time but only went smoke-free in June of this year.  Other downtown spots are following suit.  Spiro's (pizza and pasta) has also gone smoke-free.   I thought others might want to know...  Thanks for the great resources! -Anne-

Tim Horton's - [010401] I just wanted to tell you about a nice little non-smoking eatery where I live. I've seen the proof on the passing license plates ~~ Americans Love To Travel The Alaska Highway! I live at Mile 50 of the Alaska Highway in Fort St. John, British Columbia, Canada. Every American, as well as all others too, MUST pass through friendly Fort St. John, BC, in order to get up the Alaska Hwy to Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and beyond. :o)

We are about an easy 15 hour drive north of Seattle, just the right place to stop after a good day's drive north. There is plenty to do here during your stay including shopping, a multiplex movie theatre, live music, kareoke bars, exciting plays by local and travelling theatrical companies, sightseeing (we're only a short 1 hour drive from the impressive and stately W.A.C. Bennett Dam that supplies some of your power needs!), squash, walleyball and raquetball courts, 3 workout gyms with personal trainers on staff, guide hunting and fishing, river boat excursions, hiking and nature walks, and numerous other things to keep you busy and having FUN!

We are a bustling city with a trading area of over 50,000 inhabitants with great shopping, beautiful scenery, and friendly people that know how to treat travellers. We have full service hotels and motels (close to 1,000 modern rooms available at last count), several malls and shopping centers, countless gasoline, diesel, propane and natural gas service stations, many tire stores (get extra tires here for the lo-o-o-o-ng bumpy highway ahead!), honest mechanics, an indoor wave pool, lap pool and water slide, horseback riding, guide hunting and many other shops, merchants and activities waiting to make your stay a great one. :o)

I urge everyone to passing through to stop here for a lunch or dinner at a squeaky-clean, 24-hour eatery called Tim Horton's. It's right on the highway with very easy access for all travellers. It's right next door to our largest Mall so if you've got a 'big rig' there's no problem finding easy and free parking. :o)

Tim Horton's serves freshly-made donuts, fresh submarine and other sandwhiches, several hot and tasty soups to choose from, fresh coffees including specialty coffee and iced-cappacino for all you Seattle coffee addicts! They whip up a mean Chunky Chicken Salad sandwhich, and they'll throw in a hot bowl of soup, a beverage of your choice, and a tasty donut all for only $6.99 cdn. Wow... that's under 3 bucks american!

The washrooms are always clean, as is the rest of the restaurant. The manager and staff are waiting to make your 'northern experience' all that much nicer! In fact, the farther you travel up the Alaska Highway the fewer non-smoking restaurants you'll find, so check this one out. It's the best there is for a sit-down meal or something to take up the highway with you such as a dozen donuts and some fresh coffee.

So, thanks again for listing Tim Horton's in your selection of world-wide Smoke Free establishments. I am in no way connected to this restaurant, I am only another impressed customer. Keep up the great work with your site... I have a webpage too which highlights my disability and a bit about myself. You can find it at http://pages.ivillage.com/jonikas/

Keep up your great site, Doug, you really ARE doing us all a great service. Joni Simpson
