74th Street Tavern - [11-04-00] 74th Street Tavern at Phinney Avenue N. and N. 74th is now smoke-free. Finally a smoke-free pub on Phinney Ridge. Hope they don't change back. They have designer beers and good sandwiches.

Anthony's Homeport - There is now an Anthony's Homeport in Gig Harbor.  The menu is typical of Anthony's, good as usual and smoke-free to boot. [Thanks, Anne]

[11-04-00] Anthony's Homeport-- Most Anthony's Homeport locations are not smoke free in their bars. In fact, the Anthony's in Kirkland that is mentioned on your site is not smoke free for it has a small section in the back corner of the bar where smoking is allowed. Although this area is seldom used, I can't honestly say that it is smoke free until they make a policy commitment to have the place entirely smoke free.

Maybe a little community/market pressure would help them make that last small step? [Thanks Colin of Metro/KC Public Health]

Summary of Anthony's in Kirkland: Free parking in garage downstairs. Good food, especially the seafood. Bar is on 2nd floor facing marina, great view of Lake Washington, wall of large windows facing west. Sundays starting 3:30pm, they have an all-you-can-eat crab dinner which available in both restaurant and the bar -- $20 includes salad, bread, unlimited supply of warm or chilled crab. Small sign at bar entrance announces they are 100% smoke-free.

...other locations in the state, maybe they all went nonsmoking but I haven't verified. [Thanks,Ken]

Anacortes Brewery / Rockfish Grill - [001211] Hi Doug, I noticed that your pages have Anacortes Brewery as closed. Fortunately that's not the case anymore. The original owner/brewer of several years ago, Paul Wasik, is back in charge. Now, instead of the Anacortes Brewhouse it's called the Anacortes Brewery/Rockfish Grill. The beer is consistently excellent. The wood fired pizza is spectacular. The people are friendly and proud to show off their beer. This place is worth a special trip, combine it with a trip to the LaConner Brewery and you've got an awesome beer cruise going.

Archer Ale House - Just a few quick comments about Archers: fabulous, homey, comfortable, and with the best selection of beer in town.

Excellent and wide beer selection. Great little English Style Pub. One of my all time favorites and "Yes" completely smoke free. Also, very knowledgeable staff and great atmosphere. [Thanks Tammi]

Atomic Ale Brewpub - [12/29/01] Here's a smokeless brewpub in a region where smokeless is unheard of.

Located in the nuclear town of Richland this is one business that embraces the town's past not only in name but also by displaying several black and white photos of early Richland and construction of the nuclear plants up river. This small brewpub is housed in an old A&W Rootbeer but unfortunately they do not deliver beer to your car window wearing roller-skates. It is 100% smoke free on the inside with an outside smoking area that gets little use and offers a chance to be outside when it's not too hot or too cold (about 1/2 the year).

Cask: nothing here

Tap: 8 serving there own beer with names like: Half Life Hefe, Atomic Amber, Plutonium Porter, and Openheimer stout. There were also serving an alt (too light in color for style), spiced beer and IPA.

16oz Pint $3.01
64oz Pitchers: $9.50
Happy Hour: $2.25 pints

From previous visits I remember there beer being passable so I mainly support the place because they are non-smoking and I love the photos. This trip the IPA had a huge diacetyl character that overwhelmed the beer, malt and hops where there but masked. By the time I finished the pint I had learned that there has been a recent change in head brewer and I hope for better luck next time around. Cannot comment on the status of the other beers as I did not try them. Menu consists of woodfired pizzas (which I liked), pasta, and sandwiches. There is also a great local winelist for those looking for eastern Washington wines.

Barking Dog Alehouse - 12/13/03 - Operated by the folks from Fred's Rivertown Alehouse (Snohomish since 1994) this place deliberately feels much more like a restaraunt than a NW Alehouse.

Cask: Mongoose IPA support cask beer!

Tap: 20 beers - two of crap = 18 taps!

3 IPA's (Dick's, Diamond Knot, Snoqualmie Falls), 4 X-mass beers (Jolly Roger, Jubelale, Snow Cap, Tannenbaum), Manny's Pale Ale - I'm staight-up falling in love with this beer. Fresh, new, Washington brewed! other WA beers. 5 Belgian Ales: Chimay Triple, nice chewy Kwak in proper glass, Lindeman's Framboise, Maredsous 8 - rich, rasin & sugar double, Urthel Tripel - bright refreshing tripel with the citrus taste of Styrain Goldings. An amazing beer that commonly scores 4.5 in beeradvocate.com's survey, and now I know why. It was also gone by my next visit a week later, but there was promise of more interesting Belgains to come!

Bottles: Tripel Karmeliet (oats, wheat, barley - classic), Delirium Nocturnum, Chimay Grande Reserve, Duinen Dubbel & Tripel.

Glass $3

Imperial Pint $4.25

Pitcher $13

Belgians 6oz only but in proper glass: $6 - 6.75

15 Single malt Scotch's, full menu. Two tops, four tops, and just 6 bar stools. Clean lines, light wood & dark paint, stange floor plan. They took a smokey dive bar, 7th Ave. Tav., and with $300,000 turned it into your smokefree neighborhood Belgian draft meca! I just hope the neighbors take a liking to Belgian beers served in the proper glass so this place stays around. The crowd on Saturday night seemed late 20's to 40's. Even if this place was filled with rowdy frat boys they couldn't keep me from enjoying my fresh, draft Belgian beer.

Beveridge Place Pub - Update - March 9th, 2004 - Owner Gary at the Full Moon Saloon recently changed its name to Beveridge Place Pub. Same great place just a new name. Seems its on the corner of California Way SW and SW Beveridge Place, hence the name.

7/27/03 - The Full Moon Saloon is an bar with a split personality. The front 1/2 is a newly re-modeled, non-smoking, ale house. This is the place where a reclaimed bowling lane is now being used as a bar, nice open seating with board games. A bit like a reading room. The back 1/2 is a game room which allows smoking, not very busy when I was there, never caught a whiff of cigarette. Luckily for us non-smoker the restrooms are up front so you don't have to walk the gauntlet like you do at the Big Time.

Cask: none

Tap: 18 - 3 of crap = 15 Micro taps! Snipe's Brown Ale and Dick's IPA were the favorites of my visit.

Bottles: upward of 50 including Belgians & Germans

16oz Pints: 3.25
64oz Pitchers: 10.50
Happy Hour pints: 2.75
Micro Monday all pints: 2.00

No food, but they will allow you to bring in your own or even order out from

Blue Star Cafe and Pub - 11/27/01 - While many locals know it for its breakfast the Blue Star Cafe is also a 100% smoke free pub! I don't know the history of the place but it has the feel of a newer or re-modeled pub and is quite spacious. So if your looking for a place to bring a group this is a great one, there is even a separate room away from the main bar/restaurant area. I doubt if they have live music here, more of a beer and food kind a place with some great old Merchant DuVin posters scattered about.

They serve a food full menu including wine and scotch.

Cask: Not a dam thing and I'm a bit peeved about it because of the large lettering behind the bar suggesting they serve cask conditioned beers.

Tap: 22 beers - 7 with crap = 15 beers on tap! One of the few places you can find Big Sky Brewing Co.'s Moose Drool Brown Ale. When I spoke to the owner/brewer about this beer (1997) he told me that he wanted to make a good version of New Castle Nutbrown so he doubled everything and what he has ended up with is great! Also: Diamond Knot IPA (my current IPA favorite), Elision ESB, Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale & Black Butte Porter, Maritime Jolly Roger - winter seasonal, and Alaskan's Winter beer brewed with spruce tips (I've had one, I won't have another, but you decide for yourself).

Bottled Beers: 12 including Lindeman's Framboise which is nice for desert but way too sweet for a true lambic.

20oz Imperial Pints: $3.75 for the big boys. 3.75 / 20 = 19cents per oz compared to 3.50 / 16 = 22 cents per oz. SO you make out a bit with the Imperial pints, but just don't forget the extra 4oz being delivered when you're sucking down Jolly Roger, "cause it taste so good".

Happy Hour 5-7pm $2.75 Imperial Pints & $1.75 10oz schooners (Nicer size for trying multiple good beers)
Tuesdays $2.75 Imperial pints all night
Wednesdays $1.75 10oz schooners all night
Feature Beer $2.75 Imperial pints all night

Boundary Bay Brewery and Alehouse - [001124] Hello, This is Tammy Findlay at Boundary Bay Brewery. I found your website. Thanks for the great review. We recently put a new website and were wondering if you could link people to us. The URL is: bbaybrewery.com.
[Cheers!
tammy@bbaybrewery.com]

[11/7/99] Boundary Bay is another great brewery in the Bellingham area. Their beer and food is excellent. The decor is very nice with huge sails hanging all around the place. In the last couple years they've won all sorts of awards for their beer at the biggest brew festival in America, the Great American Beer Festival. This year (1999) they won for their winter beer which went on tap on November 6. They make all sorts of different brew throughout the year. You might find some of their ales on tap around Seattle and Tacoma at the finest ale houses. If you ever head up towards Bellingham you can create a great short brewery tour by hitting Boundary Bay in downtown, Orchard Street north of town near the Bellis Fair Mall, and North Fork Brewpub on the highway up to Mt. Baker. They're all great! You can also check out the Archer Ale House just south of Bellingham. All these spots but North Fork are listed in Doug's Smoke Free web pages. Check 'em out. Buck's American Cafe - I thought you'd be interested in a new smoke-free establishment in Everett. Actually, the establishment isn't new, but the smoke-free policy is!

The name of the restaurant is Buck's American Cafe, located at 2901 Hewitt Avenue, Everett, WA 98201. Phone: (425) 258-1351. Open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays. Restaurant and full bar. All credit cards accepted. Owner: Jeff Hegland. And, as of Monday, February 24th, it is a totally smoke-free establishment.

I've been frequenting this establishment since it opened in 1986. The food is excellent, and the service is superb. Half a dozen beers on tap, decent wine list, and the best martini in Snohomish County.

Thanks for providing the website; keep up the good work!

Burk's Cafe - Anyone who knows me knows that I am not particularly fond of, in my words, "food that hurts". The Creole and Cajun food at Burk's made me sweat buckets and, yes, it did "hurt" (a little), but it is very, very tasty. The flavors of seasoning and herbs swim merrily in your mouth and nose, occasionally assaulting a taste bud and making you go "ooh!".

Christie's Carriage House Pub - 11/17/03 - As far as I know all of the bars in Victoria are non-smoking so, once you've had a pint from Vancouver Island Brewing Co's in downtown Victoria, get your tourista butt onto a #11 bus and hop off at Christie's Carriage House Pub for a great selection of B.C. brews. For the $1.75 fair you'll get out of downtown to where the locals and low prices live.

This place is a large home converted into a neighborhood pub. So what we have is an English pub motif, stuck into a large house. The floor plan is fine, but the helpful, wait staff seems out of place surrounded by green and amber stripped wall paper. Don't worry, once you see the variety of tap handles you'll be glad you came. This place is about giving the customers what they want, even if it's Coormillwiser or Molson's Bluehead Lager thus the minus 9 below. I also had great fish'n'chips for a good price.

Cask: They did have a hand pump but nothing was pouring this Monday after the 90th Grey Cup (Canadian Superbowl) - so ask for cask!

Tap: 35 taps minus wine, cider, and 9 with crap = 24 beers on tap! When I was there they were pouring Crannog Ale's "Backhand of God Stout" Quite a name, quite a beer. 100% organic 100% self grown. The first craft brewery I know of that grows all of their brewing ingredients but there may be others. The real deal and quite a powerful find in the land of English style ales.

Remember the ales here, as in England, will not be as hoppy or strong as their southern counterparts in WA/OR , they are more of the session beer variety. I'm sure they think all of our beers are discusting hop bombs designed to get you too drunk to drive home.

Other fave's: Lighthouse IPA, Lighthouse Racerocks Ale & Stout. Also pouring: Storm Hurricane IPA, Alexander Keith's IPA, Sleeman's Cream Ale, Piper's Pale Ale from Vancouver Island B.C., Big Rock McNally's Ale, Black Bear Ale, Hoegaarden Wit, Leffe, Guinness, and several local cream ales, wheat ales, and honey ales that I refuse to spend my short life drinking even if they are locally made.

My favorite things about this pub: bartender's knowlege of what he was serving, in-line flow meters that make sure they move through at least a keg of each flavor every week, the glass rinser that quickly rinses away any soap from your chilled glass prior to filling. I will definately return to this pub.

Christopher's / Captain City Brewery - [001211] Hi Doug, I notice that you still have Captains City Brewing as open. Unfortunately Kevin Locke had to shut down due to a nasty accident while training for the Seattle Fire Department. Meanwhile, Christopher's Restaurant is still an excellent stop. Keep an eye open in the future for Kevin to open another brewery, perhaps on the east side of the Sound this time around.

[991009] This restaurant is located at the west end of the impossibly cute main street of Coupeville. It's across the street from Penn Cove, and just across the hall from Captains City Brewing. It usually has 4-5 of Kevin Locke's world class ales on tap. The food is fantastic, and cheap, and the service is friendly. When on Penn Cove you have to try the mussels, they are featured in many of the excellent dishes on the menu. There are several other good restaurants nearby, some with water views on the other side of the street, but the quality of the food and ales here will keep you coming back for more. Oh, did I mention the prices are shockingly cheap?

Circa - First, thanks for doing such a great job. I was so pleased the first time I ran a search for non-smoking/Seattle and came up with your page. There's a new little neighborhood bar in West Seattle (right at California and Admiral) called Circa. It's quite cozy, has great colors on the walls, has a fairly inventive pub-type menu and the bartender poured me a GREAT Guinness. It can get pretty crowded but it's a pretty great non-smoking spot, which West Seattle sorely lacks. Thanks again! [Thanks, Megan]

C.J. Borg's - OK, you gotta remember that this place is in the airport. The prices are going to be a little higher and the pace is going to be a bit hurried. Taking these forewarnings into account, it's not bad! You know how the Firehouse themed pizza parlors of awhile back didn't especially look like firehouse, but got the point across? Well this is a brewpub themed airport lounge. OK? Thanks Tracy!

10/26/97 update: CJ Borg's also slings a pretty good breakfast. A great stop before those early morning flights.

To: dougdb@dougdb.net, Subject: A New Place... Hi Doug, my favorite smoke-free place is Crazy Bird on Northgate mall way. I guarantee it is some of the best food in town. You will not be disappointed. [Thanks Chris]

Darrell's Tavern - [11-5-00] I thought I'd clue you in to Darrell's Tavern, a smoke-free beer joint on the 185 block of Aurora Ave in Shoreline (next to Fred Meyer's). It's got a couple of pool tables, rock jukebox, pinball, electronic darts, all of which suck in my book BUT large cold pitchers of beer are $4 from 3 to 7 PM. Only food is nuts, chips, beef sticks, but there's a Jack-in-the-Box next door... Oh yeah; No telephone. Keep up the good work!

Dad Watson's Restaurant and Brewery - No longer smoke-free. A new Fremont edifice brought to you by McMenamins. I had a beer here the other day. Nice place, but I am having trouble deciding whether or not it is truly smoke-free. A guy sitting two stools down from me pulled out the fixings and rolled his own. He proceeded to smoke it unchallenged by the staff and without the benefit of an ashtray. I will (eventually) go back here and ask specifically about the smoking policy, but that day I was not feeling confrontational (a rarity <grin>) and had other appointments to keep.

6/28/02 - Another change to the Dad Watson smoking policy: Dad Watson's in Fremont website states you can smoke at the bar. It is not too bad when one or two people are smoking at the bar but any more than that it gets to be annoying. We were there on a Sunday afternoon with my 4 month old boy after a walk from Gasworks. Now that I have a 4 month old I need a listing that is smoke free and kid friendly. That eliminates most places on your list. Thanks for the web site, Brian.

Don Sheidt's review of Dad Watson's.

Smoking policy update: Dad Watson's allows smoking after 9:00 pm! I will keep it on this list because of it's smoke-free nature before 9, but this should let you know when to leave to avoid the clouds.

Dahlia Lounge - Dahlia Lounge, older sibling of Etta's Seafood, is also non-smoking (at least to my observation). They have a bar in the same open room as the restaurant seating and I didn't see anyone smoking at the bar or tables. Cocktails were good, good beer selection. The food, of course, speaks for itself. [Thanks Dave]

The Edge Cafe - Cozy intimacy in a Kent mini-mall? Yep. The Edge Cafe carves out a bit of civilization in the Kent Valley. The place boasts an inventive menu and a full coffee and specialty drink selection. As you walk in you are struck by the decor, a rich bar to your left, a fireplace ringed by marble columns to the rear, and a nice secluded seating area to your right buffered from the whoosh of the espresso machine by a glass wall.

The seating area features a lending library and the cafe also sponsors on-site jazz, mystery theater, gaming tournaments, and internet connection. They will have a website up soon.

Elliott Bay Brewery and Pub - [10/9/99] What a revelation! This was formerly the site of the now defunct California & Alaska Brewery. Beer, food, and service was consistently inconsistent there, for many years. I avoided coming back for way too long. Imagine my surprise when I discovered such a complete overhaul. The place has been totally cleaned up, the beer is reliably great, and the food is wonderful too. Not only that, you'll find many other great places within a block or two either way (notably the great cajun place La Louisiane). Elliott Bay does some cajun dishes from time to time, including killer gumbo. Their menu differs with each day so call ahead if you want more than just the great beer. [Thanks Alan]

Engine House No. 9 Pub - To: <dougdb@dougdb.net>, Subject: E-9 Pub, Hey Doug: Love the site and can't believe nobody's written in with a review of Engine House Number Nine in Tacoma (or E-9 as it's called by Tacoma-ites). The best time to go to E-9 is in the summer. Why? Because late August through mid-May, E-9 is a major hang-out for UPS students and is PACKED, especially on Friday and Saturday nights ... and $2.00 Tuesdays. Parking is an issue also. But, the food is GREAT and their house micros are tasty as well. The decor is great, also. They've maintained the fire-house theme (thus the name Engine House Number Nine) including the names of the horses that used to pull the engines. Over all, a great place to eat and drink if you can go at a time when it's not too crowded!  [Thanks Kirsten and Brad]

Etta's Seafood - Ran across this really nice place during a visit to Pike Place Market. Friendly staff and lots of happy customers enjoying good food. Full bar and a good selection of brews add to the attraction of fresh seafood and other well-prepared entrees. I had the cod fish and chips. The fish was flaky, but the portion could have been bigger. The subtly seasoned shoestring fries were really good.
